2.  Applications  (U)

Eleven applications and utilities were used in the development of this report. In general, the links here are to the home pages of the applications, rather than to locally available downloads.

Font Creator
A superb true-type font editor. Used to add the underscore to the Batik font displayed by this report. (Netscape users do not see this font due to lack of server-side font support in NN 6.x).
Milkshape
Milkshape is a map creator tool, as Worldcraft is, but here it was only used to decompose the model files to verify their hit box dimensions.
mkmovie
This is a command line utility for unpacking the file generated by the startmovie command (which is basically a series of BMP files all joined together) into individual BMP files.
Model Viewer
The model viewer was used to obtain the hit box images in section I, and to obtain the source image used to add the hitbox overlay to the hitbox error video. Made by the author of Milkshape (hence the same URL).
O&O Defrag 2000 Pro
The defragmentation application used to keep the hard disk in good shape for movie capture.
Paint Shop Pro
The de facto image processing package for Windows.
SuperCache
This is the disk write caching application necessary to permit on the fly movie capture with Half-life.
VideoMach
This video editing application is capable of taking a large number of BMP files (generated by mkmovie) and converting them into an AVI file.
VirtualDub
A fantastic video editing application. The author has used VirtualDub for some time and gives a strong recommendation, especially for video capture work.
Wally
Wally is a WAD file creator and editor and was used to create the summerblue.wad file. Wally can also very very easily create colour decals.
Worldcraft
Worldcraft is the map creator application created by Valve. A little quirky and the only application the author has ever used which can properly lock up Windows 2000, forcing a reboot, but highly functional. The .rmf files in the maps page are for use with Worldcraft.
